Wine Review: Villa Wolf 2014 Pinot Noir Rosé

Villa Wolf 2014 Pinot Noir Rosé

German wines excite me. When there's a German table at a tasting that's usually the first table that I visit. German culture excites me and Germany is #1 on the list of places I need to visit before I die. Beer, brat and wine, baby! I would be living a life of gluttony the entire trip.

I'm also, as you should know by now, a big sucker for rosé so when I saw a German one I just had to have it. It's made from Pinot Noir, known as Spatburgunder over there.

Weingut J.L. Wolf is located in the Pfalz region (4 realz) and has been around since 1756, but the actual Villa wasn't built until 1843. It was successful as hell until the late 1900's when it started to drop off in quality and popularity due to lack of leadership and vision. Then our hero Ernst Loosen, you may recognize that name if you're a Riesling fan, bought it in 1996 and performed some hardcore CPR. It's still owned by Loosen but Patrick Moellendorf and Sumi Gebauer have managed the Villa since 2011 and have been doing a damn fine job bringing it back to the days of glory.

It comes in a nice tall bottle and has a classy label. The back says that it's got a 12.5% ABV and it falls under the Qualitätswein classification.

This is a real rosé, made from black grapes (obviously, because it's Pinot Noir), seeing just a short contact with its skins for color and flavor. And I absolutely love the color of the wine. It kinda looks more copper to me than pink.

The nose has incredible minerality, like I've been clinking dry rocks together and sniffing them. There's a Jolly Rancher watermelon candy aroma behind those stones that intensifies when you let the chill fade away.

The body weight is much heavier and the mouthfeel is much richer and smoother than expected. There's a little hint of sweetness that's balanced by the high acidity.

The flavor is so juicy with red berries, watermelon candy and lemon that I just... I just want to have sex with this wine, okay? If it wasn't inanimate I'd just come out and ask. "Excuse me Villa Wolf 2014 Pinot Noir Rosé, my name is Joey and I would like to have sexual relations with you. Care to join me at my place?" and it would respond "How about I buy you a drink first?" and we'd laugh and laugh and laugh.

Not only is this a fucking steal for the $11 retail price, it's a damn delicious rosé overall. It gets an A+ in price vs. quality.

QUALITY VS PRICE RATING
Price: $11
Rating: 5/5 = Highly Recommended (what does that mean?)

The bottle used was purchased by myself for the purpose of this review.
