Wine Review: Tinto Rey 2014 Super Tinto Red Blend

Matchbook Wine Company is a winery that I consider a friend of the blog. I've reviewed many of their wines and even dedicated a whole month to them in November of 2015. If you'd like to read more about them then check out my article A Brief History of Matchbook Wine Company.

Tinto Rey is their new brand that focuses on Spanish varietals and Spanish style wines. If you know about Matchbook or read that article than you know that they're based out of Dunnigan Hills, California, and obsessed with Spanish wine anyways so this is nothing strange from them. I already reviewed the 2015 Verdejo and this is their 2014 Super Tinto Red Blend. I freakin' love the label. Dueling Spaniards stabbing each other after hanging a dude is the best time ever.

The Super Tinto is 52% Tinta de Toro Tempranillo, 21% Tannat, 17% Petit Verdot and 10% Graciano. It was fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel and saw aging in French and American barrels for 16 months. Only the best juice that came out was used for the Super Tinto; enough to make 750 cases. It has a 13.9% ABV.

Since that was super quick I'm gonna take a moment to nerd out. So I was a big comic kid growing up and the token DC fanboy out of an ocean of Marvel fanboys. Discovering DC Universe Online when looking for free video games to play brought that kid back out. Now every two Thursdays my daughter and myself go to the comic book store. She gets Power Puff Girls and Strawberry Shortcake and now... there's FROZEN! She freaked out when we saw the first issue on the shelf.

But daddy gets the latest DC Rebirths of The Flash and Green Lantern. I always had a soft spot and was fascinated with The Flash because he really is the most important character in the DC Universe. And Green Lantern? Pfffft. Who wouldn't want to be a Green Lantern? I'm keeping it at these two because I ain't got time for anything else. Anyways, The Flash rebirth sucks which is heartbreaking. The Green Lantern rebirth with Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz is OUTFREAKINGSTANDING. Very well written, funny, and personable. I highly recommend any comic book geeks out there to check it out.

Alright, enough of that. On to the wine. The color is a beautiful classic ruby red. There's a chalkiness overlaying the aromas of dark chocolate, blackberries, tomato and cigar box. It's such an alluring and wonderful nose that I could see myself trying to get drunk just off the fumes.

It's medium to full bodied, rich in flavor, silky in mouthfeel, with balanced acidity and soft, sweet tannin. There's flavors of dark chocolate, blackberries, raisins and dried herbs. The best thing about this wine in the mouth is its ridiculously long finish. It lasts forever with raisins and the chalkiness from the nose returning.

I'm "chalking" this one up as a recommendation. This, I feel, is everything that Matchbook has always been about being fully realized. I love those guys, I love their wines (okay, I'm not big on their Mossback label but I know many of my colleagues are), and the new Tinto Rey has my approval to proceed with production and to be purchased by the public. Thumbs up! Hit 'em with the Heeeeeeeeeeein!
