Morgan "Double L Vineyard" Syrah 2019

The 2018 Double L Vineyard Syrah by Morgan Winery is out of Santa Lucia Highlands, California. It saw 10 months in French oak, 25% of it new. It's purple in the glass, and fresh from being opened you could have told me it was aged in Tequila barrels and I would have believed you. The next day, that agave was still there but not nearly as aggressive. There's also notes of plums, strawberry, lavender, and lots of pepper. Strong structure and chewy! $44? Heck yeah! Pair with beef stew, sharp cheddar, or smoked crab dip.

Temecula Hills Estate Syrah 2016

Temecula Hills is a product of Oak Mountain Winery, which we just saw two quick reviews from. Their 2016 Estate Syrah is 100% Syrah from the Windy Ridge vineyard, it saw time in French and American oak, and it will cost you $49. That nose is lively! There's notes of big black cherries, black table pepper, back licorice, raisins, and caramel. It's big and bold, savory, spicy and BRILLIANT! Reminds me of a Côte-Rôtie but still clearly from a hot climate. Pair with Camembert cheese with cured meat or a big o' ribeye.

Banshee Rosé 2019

Oh I love Banshee's wine so much, and this Rosé in no exception! The 2019 vintage is salmon in color and made with 48% Sangiovese, 25% Grenache, 16% Syrah, 8% Barbera, and 3% Zinfandel. Cantaloupe is all over it, with honeydew melon, lemon, and toast. I could smell it all night! This is not a quaffing rosé. This is one that you want to cradle and savor.

Morgan G17 Syrah 2018

It's wine number 3 of 3 in this round of Morgan reviews, and we're ending it with the 2018 G17 Syrah. This wine is 94% Syrah, 3% Grenache, and 3% Tempranillo. Enough of it is from California's Santa Lucia Highands to be legally labeled as such, it was fermented in open top tanks, and it saw 10 months in French oak (20% new). The ABV is 14.5%.

The color of the wine is garnet. The nose is just loaded with fine black table pepper enough to make you sneeze, followed by blackberries, strawberry candy, lavender, graphite, tar, and ethanol fumes. Ooooof! That nose is serious business! On the palate it's medium to full bodied with a rich mouthfeel, balanced acidity, and bitter, bitter tannin. The flavors are lead by those bitter tannins with cedar, dark chocolate, and tar. The blackberries are still there, as well as a ton of fine black table pepper, with the addition of vanilla and licorice. And they all continue on forever on the finish with burning ethanol heat.

Who is in the mood to barbecue or grill some meat? I ask because I've got the right wine for you right here. This is a Syrah that comes with the requirement that you light up that goddamn grill.

Morgan Cotes du Crow's 2018

I've got three wines by Morgan Winery to review and I'm starting off with what they call "Cotes du Crow's", which is their Rhone-style blend. Normally it's just Grenache and Syrah, but this year they threw in a bit of Tempranillo to spice things up a bit. So it's 66% Grenahce, 31% Syrah, and 3% Tempranillo. It spent 10 months in 100% French oak; 7% new. 

It's ruby red in color with aromas of raspberries, blackberries, anise, and sweet spices. On the palate it's medium bodied with a soft tannin and a tart acidity. There's flavors of raspberries, plum, vanilla, and oak. It's boozy on the finish, and the plum goes on forever. This is just an outstanding Rhone-style wine from Cali at $20, and a no-brainer to pick up when you spot it at the wine shop.

Penfold's Club Tawny, February Wine Pick of the Month

It's February again so it's time to pull out a fortified wine and keep yourselves warm! This year I've picked a staple of mine for when things get cold: Penfold's Club Tawny. It's made with Mataro (AKA Mourvédre), Shiraz (AKA Syrah), and Grenache (AKA Garnacha) from South Australia, and then produced in the Tawny style of Port. They've been making this stuff for almost 60 years and it's always one of the best deals out there for fortified wine, and it's got an 18% ABV so be careful!

The color of the wine is cherry red turning into brick, and on the nose there'e aromas stewed plums, cherry sauce, dried apricots, caramel, and mint. It's got a full body with a wonderful lipsmacking sweetness that doesn't get out of hand and a nice acidity to compliment it. There's flavors of stewed plums, raisins, cherry sauce, dark chocolate, walnuts, and brown sugar. I just love everything about this.

The snow is coming, and sipping some Club Tawny in between shovelings will keep you warm and happy. Cheers, guys!

Best of Fall 2019!

Today is the first day of Winter so here are the Top 5 wines that I reviewed and rated this Fall!
Deciding on 5 through 3 was not an easy task because I had to choose between six wines that I rated 4.5 in price vs quality!

#5. Masottina Prosecco Treviso Brut

Region: Prosecco, Veneto, Italy
Review Release: September 26th, 2019

man, this is some awesome Prosecco for $14. It's got a rather floral nose with white flowers, fruit aromas of  lemon and apples, and a little bit of honey. There's flavors of pears, apple, lemon, and herbs. On the midpalate it's light and crisp and fluttery, but then it goes ahead and finishes creamy as the carbonation froths up in your mouth.

This is probably the best deal for a Prosecco in this price range that I've had in a long time. Elegant yet still fun, bright and happy, and just good quality for the price.

#4. Yalumba "The Y Series" Viognier 2018

Region: South Australia, Australia
Review Release: November 1st, 2019

The color of the wine is a pale yellow with a greenish hue. There's a lot of honeysuckle and vanilla on the nose, but there's also aromas of apricots, lychee, lemon zest, and menthol. On the palate it's light bodied with a sharp acidity and a bit of an oily mouthfeel. There's flavors of apricot, tart lime, and banana. Then it finishes with a mixed bowl of tropical fruits and a drop of sweetness.

This is fantastic, just a happy wine, and an outstanding deal for $12. And it's even better with food; lobster, baked scallops, chicken piccata, ham, or even hot dogs! You know what? I really think this wine would make an outstanding pair with hot dogs! Let's try it!

#3. Bogle Phantom Red 2015

Region: California
Review Release: November 24th, 2019

So the color of the wine is freakin' purple. And man, I loooove the nose! There's black cherries, blueberries, chocolate, black licorice, toasty oak, and like a drop of black olive juice. I need to go change my underwear. It's medium bodied with a semi-rich mouthfeel with dusty tannins and moderate acidity. On the midpalate there's flavors of blackberries, black cherries, vanilla, mocha, maple, and a little bit of dirt. There's a savoriness and heat to the long lasting finish, with flavors of blackberries, mocha, and zippy raspberries.

The Phantom Red is one of those popular $20 wines that sells extremely well, especially among casual wine consumers who really don't know know all that much about wine. So it's easy to think that it's just overrated, overpriced, and overproduced. To that thought I say this: There's a lot of Zinfandel characteristics in this wine. I hate Zinfandel. And I think this is killer.

#2. Panthera Russian River Chardonnay 2017

Region: Russian River, Sonoma, California
Review Release: December 1st, 2019

It's light gold in color. The nose is dominated by vanilla, followed by pineapple, apple, butter, honey, and ginger. Damn I love the smell of oaky Chardonnay. On the palate it's full bodied with a rich mouthfeel and a bright acidity that lifts up the weight of the wine. There's flavors of vanilla, pineapple, apple, banana, and butter. Then it finishes with a thick coating in your mouth of apples and banana.

I'm still in love with this wine. It's oaky and buttery and hedonistic and gorgeous. And it's my wine pick of the month, so go get it!

#1. Two Hands Angels' Share Shiraz 2018

Region: McLaren Vale, Australia
Review Release: November 3rd, 2019

This is 100% Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Australia, and oh that color is straight up purple and it's beautiful! And what a wonderful jamminess this wine has! There's aromas of big juicy plums, grape jelly, lavender, vanilla bean, and black table pepper. And there's nothing subtle about any of those. On the palate it's medium bodied with a silky mouthfeel yet a grainy tannin and low acidity. The flavors imitate the nose and are just as big and juicy and expressive, and then it finishes lengthy and boozy and lustly.

Hell friggin yeah. Hell. Friggin. Yeah. I was expecting something with a bit more intricate, something a bit more French Syrahish in style, but this does not hold back from all the Australian Shiraz that it is and was really meant to be... and it's so goddamn good. It punches you right in the face and I love it.

Wine Quickie: Clos Saint Sebastien Collioure Empreintes 2017

I was unable to get to this bottle during the Garnacha Day chat on Twitter with #WiningHourChat, but I'm finally getting to it now! Collioure is an AOC within the Banyuls region of southern France, and for red wines they focus on GSM blends (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre). This one is medium bodied with  a lush mouthfeel, balanced acidity, and soft tannin. It's very nice with notes of strawberries,  raspberries, dark chocolate, graphite, and a lovely savory finish. I'm glad that this was the odd-man out that night, because I am really enjoying it all on its own.

Wine Quickie: Château Minuty "M" Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018

This is a limited edition bottle designed by English artist and designer Ruby Taylor! I once was told that Minuty is the top selling Rosé in France, but it was also a sales rep who told me that so he could have been blowing smoke. It's a good one, though, and I would divert people away from those other top selling popular Rosé's to Minuty any day.  Made from 50% Grenache, 40% Cinsault and 10% Syrah. It's light but juicy and very floral with a nice minerality, grapefruit, raspberry, and strawberries. Minuty is fun and refreshing and absolutely crushable.

Best of Summer 2019!

It's the first day of Autumn so here are the Top 5 wines that I reviewed and rated this summer! Funnily, the top spot actually goes to the review that came out just two days into the season!

#5. Hazelfern Cellars Pinot Noir 2017

Region: Willamette Valley, Oregon
Review Release: June 30th, 2019

The color of the wine is ruby red with some pretty good clarity to it. And the nose is sooooo goooood with raspberries, cherries, mocha, toffee, wet dirt, and copper. Uuuuuungh. I don't even care about drinking this, I just wanna smell it all night. On the palate it's light bodied but has a rich mouthfeel with a bright acidity and grainy tannin. There's flavors of raspberries, strawberries, vanilla, cola, wet wood, and even some apple. It finishes with strawberries and cola, and with a silky smooth mouthfeel but with some heat to spice it up.

Wow. This is everything I expect out of an almost-$50 Pinot and then some. It's both elegant and rustic, while being both fruity and earthy, and both light bodied and rich in mouthfeel. This is a very well done Pinot and quite the enjoyable experience.

#4. VINI Pinot Grigio 2017

Region: Thracian Valley, Bulgaria
Review Release: August 18th, 2019

The wine has a 12% ABV and it's a light straw yellow in color. It still smells like those little prepackaged cups of sliced peaches in peach juice, with almonds and vanilla, but I'm detecting the addition of some pineapple and hay this time around. It's light to medium bodied with a rich mouthfeel and a nice acidity that's, yet again, rather mellow for a Pinot Grigio. The peaches come back on the flavor, but there's also melon, a tiny squeeze of grapefruit, and a little bit of spearmint.

Pour me this Pinot Grigio any day of the week, man, because it is excellent. For $10 you're getting a Pinot Grigio with character and life, and one that is well above the vast majority of its competition in the same price range. Kris? Ecco Domani? Put them down right now and pick this up.

#3. Dane Cellars Valeria 2016

Region: Sonoma Valley, California
Review Release: July 4th, 2019

The color of the wine is ruby red with violet highlights. Speaking of violet, you get plenty of violet on the nose! But there's also strawberry sauce, orange rind, dark chocolate, beach sand, and of course that high ethanol presence that you expect out of Grenache. On the palate it's on the lighter side of medium bodied with a fluent mouthfeel, grainy but soft tannin, and an acidity that hides behind the effects of that high ethanol. There's flavors of cold brewed coffee, black cherries, strawberry sauce, graphite, and a little dirt. It finishes super silky smooth with just a little bit of grainy tannin standing up in protest.

Oh my goodness. Bart has truly made something special here. Valeria is elegant and smooth but it still has grit and heartiness.

#2. Domaine Bessa Valley Enira 2009

Region: Thracian Valley, Bulgaria
Review Release: August 25th, 2019

The color of the wine is brick red but holy Moses just forget about color for right now! Chocolate liqueur. Raspberry liqueur. Cinnamon sugar. Cherries, mint, and graphite. God fucking damnit this wine has a sexy nose. On the midpalate it's medium to full bodied with a velvety and lush mouthfeel, with smooth tannin, tamed acidity, and just the right amount of umami. There's flavors of cherries, blackberries, chocolate, cinnamon, and sinful lust.

For the regular price of $26 I'd give this wine a 4.5/5 in price vs quality. It's outstanding. But you can get it right now for $18 (at the publication of this review) and that totally brings it up to a 5/5 and a no brainer. This is absolutely killer for the cost. #1. Ashkar Shafaya 2014

Region: Galilee, Israel
Review Release: June 23rd, 2019

Now let's get to this friggin' kickass wine because OH MY GOOOOODNEEEEESSSS THE JUICINESS!

The color of the wine is a ruby red. It's so black peppery on the nose that it almost makes you want to sneeze! There's also aromas of cassis, plum, cigarette tobacco, and licorice. Oh lordy lordy this nose is STELLAR! I think I'm in love! On the palate it's full bodied with bright acidity, a fine dusty tannin, and a rich mouthfeel. The cassis and plum from the nose return on the palate super-juicy and explosive, and they're joined by blackberry, chocolate, and graphite. Then it finishes with big juicy plum, caramel, and graphite, and a little grip from the tannin. Oh man.

This wine is big, juicy, expressive, alive, and gorgeous! I simply can't rave enough about Shafaya!

Wine Quickie: Mas de Cadenet l'Echappée Belle Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018

I really liked this Rosé and my wife liked it even more! It's got a zippy and refreshing personality that just makes me smile. On the nose there's rose petals, grapefruit skin, and Fruity Pebbles; while on the palate there's strawberries, citrus, and peach. The bright acidity gives this fruit-forward rosé a big uplift into happiness, and the long-lasting finish is wonderful. Thumbs up from this guy (and his lady)!

Wine Quickie: Roseline Prestige Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018

This is 40% Cinsault, 40 % Grenache, and 20% Syrah, with a coppery pink color. It's an uncomplicated but nice and enjoyable rosé with lime, strawberries, pepper, and a little mint. I really, really like it and it's actually pretty hard not to drink it too fast. It's also pairing well with this herb & garlic cheddar that I'm stuffing my face with. Good stuff, man.

Wine Quickie: Domaine Chantepierre Lirac 2017

Lirac is a subregion of Côtes du Rhône, France, and this wine is a blend of 45% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 15% Mourvedre. It's got a full body and rich mouthfeel with tamed acidity, soft tannin, and fantastic umami. There's aromas and flavors of black cherries, blackberries, leather, licorice, and mint. This is just a wonderfully easily approachable CDR GSM for $18. And, as I've found with most Grenache based wines, it does benefit from seeing a slight chill.

September Wine Pick: Chateau de L'Aumerade Côtes de Provence Cuvée Marie Christine Cru Classe Rosé 2017

Oh my goodness, September is going to be a fun month! There will be wines from France, a few Proseccos from Italy, and two American Vermouths. Alright, wines from France may be an understatement because there's a TON of those, and every Tuesday in September will feature a Rosé from Provence, France. Let's call it "Rosé Tuesday".

I'm finishing up my three-part Sake series for this month's long-read article, and I'll even be reviewing a canned sake. CANNED SAKE? WTF? Garnacha Day is on the 20th so there's that. And, as always, additions will be made as the month moves along. I might even review your face, so stop looking at me like that.
