Fly Wines: Welcome to the Vine High Club

Wine clubs can be a whole lot of fun, and I just got this box by Fly Wines, whose goal is to share independent wineries from around the world with its customers. I have two daughters so you're damn right I'm gonna mention this is a woman owned business, aaaaand a black woman owned business. That is friggin' awesome.

So Fly Wines just launched recently and their first offering is four wines (in 187ml bottles) by Fortino Winery out of Santa Clara, California. Which was a good decision because the wines are very nice, and I always love seeing something different that doesn't get into the market of my area often like a Sangiovese from California.

But just by everything that I see, Fly Wines has their stuff together. They have an excellent presentation, with obvious care into their image, and they ESPECIALLY have beautiful and protective packaging. I've seen wine clubs that showed up with awful presentation and packaging, but Fly Wines is top notch in this area. The best I've personally seen yet of its kind.

Getting a delivery from this wine club would be a pleasure. I'm gonna give it a big thumbs up!

Vilarnau Rosé Reserva Cava

This rosé Cava from Barcelona, Spain is 85% Garnacha and 15% Pinot Noir. It's salmon in color and on the nose there's aromas of strawberries, lemon, whipped cream, and little bit of peach and toast. It's light and foamy on the palate with a bright acidity and soft tannin. All of the aromas on the nose return on the palate to create quite a delicious sparkling rosé for the price.

Listen to both Joey and Mike recommend this wine on episode 10 of Grapes & Capes: Cava Countdown

Rosé All Day Spritz Rosé + Grapefruit with Bubbles

Okay, I'm going to be blunt: Rosé All Day are not kidding when they say "+ grapefruit" because there's A LOT of grapefruit here. And that wouldn't be a big deal in the middle of July or August when it's hot as hell and if this thing was chilled ice cold, because it would be completely crushable and I would just abuse that 4 pack of cans so easily it's ridiculous. But it's September and starting to get chilly here so you know what I did? I took an inexpensive Cava, that I knew I could trust to provide some wonderful bready yeastiness, and mixed them together. It was pretty damn enjoyable. I'm not even joking. Improvisation!

Justin Bogaty Winemaker Series ~ Chardonnay 2019, Rosé 2019, Merlot 2019

Justin Bogaty Winemaker Series ~ Chardonnay 2019, Rosé 2019, Merlot 2019

In the four years that I've been reviewing wines by the Justin Bogaty / Bogati Family Winery out of Virginia, I've had some of their Chardonnays but never their Justin Bogaty Winemaker Series Chardonnay. The 2019 vintage is medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and tamed acidity. It's got a tropical classic aroma and flavor profile of pineapple and banana, and then of course vanilla. It's a good solid Chardonnay and I like it, but that Veramar Chardonnay (also made by Bogaty) is still on my mind. The 2019 Rosé continues to be juicy and fun with a melting pot of Jolly Ranchers. Sour apple, watermelon, and strawberry. Full bodied and, yeah, it's a little sweet but everybody needs to calm down with their fear of that word. I said it's fun. Have fun. The 2019 Merlot is just so amazing on the nose. Super spicy with black pepper and cinnamon, then plums and cherries. It's lighter on the midpalate than I was expecting, with also brighter acidity. Perky with tart unripe blueberries and almost like an apple skin thing going on. There's also plums, a nice minerality, and black tea. It's got such a great nose and it's so different and interesting on the palate. I'm thinking it would actually be pretty damn good with a grilled cheese.

Look for three more wines by the Bogaty Famiy Winery in the premier episode of the upcoming Grapes & Capes Podcast!

Morgan Winery ~ Highland Chardonnay 2018, Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Rosé of Grenache 2019

Wasn't Morgan just on this blog? Well, they're back! And delivering that same great quality as they always do. The 2018 Highland Chardonnay is like a buttered biscuit with a side of pineapples. It's pretty oaky and you know that's my jam with Chardonnay. However, the bright and tart finish makes it more versatile with food than most oaky buttery Chards. Speaking of bright and tart, the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc out of Monterey is all about the zip! There is Semillon in here so it's got a medium body and a round mouthfeel, but I hope you like Sour Patch Kids because the tartness will make your mouth pucker. And not in a bad way, because it's pretty yummy and very refreshing. It's very grassy with grapefruit and lemon. I'm drooling thinking about this with Oysters Rockefeller. Finally, it's the 2019 Rosé of Grenache. With a weighty mouthfeel and tamed acidity, this is a rosé that's meant to savor instead of porch pound. Of course there's watermelon and strawberry, but there's also vanilla and orange skin. The best part of this wine is the finish. It's super juicy and, in a big surprise, spicy.

Bonterra Boxed Wine ~ Sauvignon Blanc & Rosé

Box wine again??? Don't worry, this is the last one of those for awhile. As much as I love Bonterra, the drop off is pretty noticeable when coming from a bag-in-the-box. Overall yeah, they're better than Peter Vella and Franzia, but still there's not much going on. The Sauvignon Blanc is simply lemon and grapefruit while the Rosé is simply watermelon and strawberry. Their very basic profile is not helped out like it should be by the acidity because that is rather flat. That said, if it's chilled up nice and good I wouldn't say no to drinking it and it's fine for a porch party with a bunch of friends where nobody is going to analyze the crap out of it like I have to.

Tinto Rey Rosé 2019, April Wine Pick

April is Matchbook Wine Company Month, with reviews focusing on their wine all month! This is the second time Matchbook has had their own month on this blog, but I've done A LOT of reviews of their wines in the past six years. To learn about their history, read my article "A Brief History of Matchbook Wine Company".

Tinto Rey is one of the labels that Matchbook produces, and their Rosé is my wine pick of the month!  It's April! It's officially Rosé season! This wine is made from 50% Tempranillo, 35% Tannat, and 15% Verdejo. It was fermemted in stainless steel hand has an ABV of 12.8%. For the third vintage in a row, the color is  Crayola peach. There's aromas of white peaches, limes, strawberries, and potpourri. On the palate it's medium bodied with a slightly oily mouthfeel and bright but not overpowing acidity. There's a bit of saltiness among flavors of cherries, peaches, limes, and strawberry. Then it finishes nice and juicy, with the acidity brightening the fruit. Yum yum! This is a very good Rosé for the price!

Hess Select Rosé 2019

This is the third and final wine on this round of Hess reviews, and we're going pink!

The 2019 Hess Select Rosé is 100% Pinot Noir from several California appellations, fermented in stainless steel, and has a 13.5% ABV. It's got a beautiful and vibrant pink color, a medium body, and a balanced acidity that keeps things fruity without getting tart. There's a cloud of floralness hovering over aromas and flavors of strawberries, cherries, and peaches. Then it finishes just as juicy as the midpalate.

This is a lipsmacking, juice-forward Rosé that you can cradle and enjoy all night and not be tempted by crisp acidity to toss down your gullet too quick. I really liked it, and for the price I have got to give it a Recommendation.

Vilarnau Rosé Reserva Cava

Vilarnau is near the city of Barcelona. They've been making Cava since 1982 but their current vineyards were acquired in 1990 when they moved locations. This is the second of two wines by Vilarnau that I'm reviewing this week: First I'm reviewing their Brut Rosé and on Sunday it's their Brut Reserva!

This rosé is 90% Trepat and 10% Pinot Noir.

I absolutely recommend this to anybody looking to drop $14 on a pink bubbly!

Wine Quickie: Rutherford Hill Rosé of Merlot 2018

Oh yes, we have a rosé for #MerlotMe October! Out of Napa Valley, Rutherford Hill was founded in 1972 and was a pioneer in the development of Merlot in California. Their Rosé of Merlot is light and crisp while featuring strong white flowers and being loaded with peaches, citrus, and honey. It may be a bit overpriced but it's a damn good rosé! My wife liked it even more than I did and that earns it extra points.

Wine Quickie: Château Minuty "M" Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018

This is a limited edition bottle designed by English artist and designer Ruby Taylor! I once was told that Minuty is the top selling Rosé in France, but it was also a sales rep who told me that so he could have been blowing smoke. It's a good one, though, and I would divert people away from those other top selling popular Rosé's to Minuty any day.  Made from 50% Grenache, 40% Cinsault and 10% Syrah. It's light but juicy and very floral with a nice minerality, grapefruit, raspberry, and strawberries. Minuty is fun and refreshing and absolutely crushable.

Wine Quickie: Mas de Cadenet l'Echappée Belle Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018

I really liked this Rosé and my wife liked it even more! It's got a zippy and refreshing personality that just makes me smile. On the nose there's rose petals, grapefruit skin, and Fruity Pebbles; while on the palate there's strawberries, citrus, and peach. The bright acidity gives this fruit-forward rosé a big uplift into happiness, and the long-lasting finish is wonderful. Thumbs up from this guy (and his lady)!

Wine Review: Georges Vigouroux Pigmentum Malbec Rosé 2018

The Vigouroux family has been owned by Chateau Haute-Serre since 1887 and have been champions of the Malbec variety in Cahors and beyond the entire time. It's currently headed by Bertrand-Gabriel Vigouroux and shows know signs of leaving the family any time soon.

I love me some Cahors. Old World, rustic, Malbec from southern France. I once saw a video where a dude took a huge ass jug half filled with Cahors Malbec, filled the rest with water, and it didn't thin out even a little. That's how deeply pigmented Cahors Malbec can be, and that's why it's called the "Black Wine of Cahors".

Buuuuuuut this one is a Rosé, which I was pretty excited about, only to have that excitement unfortunately be short lived. I didn't like it.

Wine Quickie: Roseline Prestige Côtes de Provence Rosé 2018

This is 40% Cinsault, 40 % Grenache, and 20% Syrah, with a coppery pink color. It's an uncomplicated but nice and enjoyable rosé with lime, strawberries, pepper, and a little mint. I really, really like it and it's actually pretty hard not to drink it too fast. It's also pairing well with this herb & garlic cheddar that I'm stuffing my face with. Good stuff, man.

Wine Quickie: Hecht & Bannier Côtes de Provence Rosè 2018

Hecht & Bannier Côtes de Provence Rosè 2018

This rosè is 45% Cinsault, 45% Grenache, and 10% Vermentino (WTF???). Although it's got a nice nose of raspberry seltzer, lemon, and roses, it kind of falls apart for me on the palate. It's rich with an unbalanced acidity and an unflattering and awkward flavor profile of tart grapefruit, bitter orange, and sweet pear juice. It's well received from other reviewers all across the board, so maybe you'll like it. But it ain't my thing, man.

September Wine Pick: Chateau de L'Aumerade Côtes de Provence Cuvée Marie Christine Cru Classe Rosé 2017

Oh my goodness, September is going to be a fun month! There will be wines from France, a few Proseccos from Italy, and two American Vermouths. Alright, wines from France may be an understatement because there's a TON of those, and every Tuesday in September will feature a Rosé from Provence, France. Let's call it "Rosé Tuesday".

I'm finishing up my three-part Sake series for this month's long-read article, and I'll even be reviewing a canned sake. CANNED SAKE? WTF? Garnacha Day is on the 20th so there's that. And, as always, additions will be made as the month moves along. I might even review your face, so stop looking at me like that.

Anyways... we're living on borrowed time here for summer weather, so my wine pick of the month is this refreshing Syrah / Grenache Rosé while the sunny days last!

Wine Quickie: MANCAN Canned Wine

Huh. Canned wine marketed for men. IIIII'm not so sure about this one, guys, but it's actually better than some of the other canned wines out there. I'd take it over Darkhorse or Cupcake any day of the week, but that doesn't mean it's Underwood or Santa Julia.

The White Fizz, which is a semi-sparkling unoaked Chardonnay and Viognier blend, is the best of the batch and I actually really enjoyed it. Crisp and quaffable with lots of apples and pears. I was honestly surprised at how serviceable it is as a canned sparkling wine. The White Wine is a blend of unoaked Chardonnay and Viognier, with a single note of dull melon and no liveliness. It's flat and uninteresting. The Rosé is a blend of  unoaked Chardonnay and Zinfandel, and it has your basic rosé profile of watermelon and strawberries. It's okay but it'll make a good summer crusher, ice cold right out of the can. The Red is a blend of Merlot and Zinfandel. It has nice black cherries, chocolate, and caramel, but it's lackluster in all other aspects such as mouthfeel, acidity, and tannin.

All things said, I like the story of the founders and the winery (check out their website to read about it). Their goal is to create "carefree wine that you can take anywhere without the persnickety" and it looks like they're having a good time doing it. Buy that White Fizz if you see it, guys!

Wine Quickie: Chanmé Frosé 2018 by Frozen Frogs

I was not fully able to enjoy Chanmé Frosé over our little family vacation because my wife instantly laid claim to it and holy crap SHE LOVED IT! I did have a sip and I have to agree: It's pretty darn delicious and PERFECT for pool and beach time. Basically it's a lightly sweetened rosé with added natural flavors specifically meant for you to freeze into basically a slushy. Then you can suck it right out of the pouch with a straw. C'mon, don't get all snooty nosed. This is all about fun and cooling off, and Chanmé Frosé delivers.

Celebrate Wine & Cheese Day with California's Fastest Growing Wine

California Rosé Paired with Recipe from the new "Wine Country Table" Cookbook by Award-Winning Napa Author Janet Fletcher

Guest post by the Wine Institute

SAN FRANCISCO — To help you celebrate National Wine & Cheese Day (THIS THURSDAY, JULY 25th!!!) on trend, California’s Wine Institute shares this recipe—paired with the state’s hottest summer wine, California Rosé-- from their new book “Wine Country Table: With Recipes that Celebrate California’s Sustainable Harvest” by award-winning Napa author Janet Fletcher.

In 2018, Rosé continued  to show phenomenal growth, with sales volume in the U.S. jumping 46% compared to 2017. Formerly considered just a casual sipper, winemakers have given rosé more serious treatment in recent years, creating an amazing variety of still and sparkling Rosés that suit a variety of tastes and show great diversity—pairing with just about any course throughout the year. Wine lovers can find the perfect fit with options from dry, sweet, pale and dark to light-bodied, intense, sparkling and still versions.

This recipe, featured on page 274 in the book, features a light, savory frittata with sheep cheese—a cheese more special than your everyday cheese but still readily available.

FRITTATA WITH BROCCOLI RABE AND SHEEP CHEESE
WINE SUGGESTION: California Rosé or California Sauvignon Blanc

This warm frittata makes a nourishing lunch or rustic first course; accompany with a tuft of lightly dressed salad greens, if you like. Leftover frittata can be sliced and tucked inside a length of baguette with some soft lettuce and a swipe of mayonnaise.

- SERVES 3 FOR LUNCH OR 4 AS A FIRST COURSE

INGREDIENTS
3⁄4 pound (375 g) broccoli rabe, tough stems trimmed
6 large eggs
1⁄2 cup (35 g) grated aged sheep’s milk cheese, such as
Bellwether Farms Pepato or pecorino romano
1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the broccoli rabe and boil until just tender,

about 3 minutes. Drain in a sieve and cool quickly under cold running water. Drain and squeeze well to remove excess moisture. Chop coarsely. Measure out 1 1∕2 cups (250 g) chopped broccoli and reserve the remainder for another use.

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs until blended, then whisk in the cheese, salt, and several grinds of black pepper. Stir in the broccoli rabe. Heat a 10-inch (25 cm) nonstick frying pan over medium heat, then add the olive oil. When the oil is hot, add the egg mixture and use a rubber spatula to spread into an even layer. Reduce the heat to medium-low.

Cook without stirring until the frittata is about two-thirds set, 6 to 7 minutes. Transfer to the oven and bake just until the frittata feels firm on top and has puffed slightly, 9 to 10 minutes. Immediately slide the frittata onto a cutting board or wooden serving board. The frittata should slip out easily, but if not, use a rubber spatula to loosen it. Let cool for 15 minutes, then slice into wedges and serve.

TRIMMING TIP: The thick stems of broccoli rabe are often more tender than the thin stems. If a stem feels tough or woody, remove it. Otherwise, just trim any dry ends.
