Art of Earth Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay

This isn't my first run-in with Art of the Earth by Mack & Schühle. I reviewed their Montepulciano d'Abruzzo while I was cooking up some burgers and they paired deliciously. These wines here, however, are from Mendoza, Argentina. Like the Montepulciano, they are 100% organic. I'm sure you've guessed that's kind of the point of the brand.

The Chardonnay is 100% unoaked and it's basically a refreshing and citrusy white wine. It could have spent more time aging with the lees to bring out more tropical fruit and Chardonnay character, but honestly I really didn't care. I'm kind of over that analytical stuff when it comes to my own pleasure, and I liked it for what it is. For a $12 unoaked Chard, it gets the job done.

The Cabernet Sauvignon is also unoaked and it's totally solid. This is straight up what you should demand to expect in a Cab at that price range instead of what we're now given. It's got good quality, good structure, current and cherries, and a nice addition of savoriness.

It just looks like these guys are bringing you $12 wines (the hot spot for the average US wine consumer) with some good stuff for the price, while bringing 100% organic in as a bonus. It hits just right: just what you want, right where you want it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Natural Origins Boxed Wine ~ Malbec & Cabernet Sauvignon

I know what you're thinking: BOX WINE??? Has Joey lost his mind??? First of all, if you've been a long time follower then you know I'm missing a few screws. Secondly, this is boxed wine made by Domain Bousquet! This winery makes some pretty damn good affordable organic wine from Argentina, and both of these selections are from Mendoza. Not only are they organic but they're also vegan. The Cabernet is a pretty good one for what you expect from boxed Cabernet! It's got some great Cabernet qualities such as cherries, cassis, and chocolate but it's also rich while having soft tannin. Much like Bousquet's regular bottled Malbecs are impressive, so is this boxed one. It's got a great pluminess, juicy blackcurrants, minerality, and a lighter body but stronger tannin than the Cabernet. Both of these are a great deal, but that Malbec is a steal.

Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2018 for Malbec World Day

It's #MalbecWorldDay and tonight I'm enjoying this killer Auténtico Malbec 2018 from Colomé. It's a deeply pigmented violet purple in color with aromas of medicinal cherries, cranberry juice, figs, sweet tobacco, a little bit of licorice, and I swear a little bit of cumin or another spice that I can't quite place. It's medium bodied with moderate acidity, and the chalky tannin give its mouthfeel a bit of a harshness (not in a bad way, but in a rustic way). There's flavors of black cherries, raspberries, espresso, vanilla, and concrete. And it finishes with black cherries, espresso, and those chalky tannins. This is an awesome, awesome, Malbec! Cheers everybody, and happy Malbec World Day!

Ferllen Gran Reserva Malbec 2014

The color of the 2014 Ferllen Gran Reserva from Mendoza, Argentina is a dark cherry red. The nose is just amazing! There's aromas of plums, cranberries, roses, vanilla, dark chocolate, sea salt, and sweet tobacco. This is another one of those wines that you could smell all night without drinking and be happy. On the palate it's medium bodied with a silky smooth mouthfeel and moderate tannin. There's flavors of plums, cranberries, table grapes, dark chocolate, black table pepper, and mustard seed. Then it finishes with plums and leather and tobacco.

Oh hell yeah! From my first sniff to my last sip I loved every aspect of this wine. Seriously, I fell in love. It's just sooooo gooooood! I expected it to be double the price that it is when I took a look at what it would cost your wallet, and for $30 this is A GODDAMN STEAL. Dude... amazing.

Ferllen Reserve Malbec 2017

The 2017 Reserve Malbec from Ferllen is from a Single Vineyard located in Los Chacayes, Uco Valley, Mendoza. Fermentation took place with 100% indigenous yeasts, then 100% of it spends 18 months in used French barrels. The color of the wine is a beautiful cherry red. There's granite minerality over aromas of blackberries, plums, vanilla, a bit of sour milk (in not a bad way), and sweet spices. On the palate it's got a smooth mouthfeel with low moderate acidity and sweet but tightly grained tannin. There's flavors of blackberries, plums, dark chocolate, green peppers, and vanilla. Then it finishes hot with ethanol heat and tannin, with flavors of blackberries and vanilla.

This is darn good Malbec for the price! And it paired excellently well with Filet Mignon!

It's time to give in to canned wine! (featuring Santa Julia Chardonnay, Malbec Rosé, and Tintillo)

Santa Julia Chardonnay, Malbec Rosé, and Tintillo

Canned wine is becoming a big thing and it completely makes sense. It's undeniably the enclosure that keeps wine that you want to drink fresh the freshest. That's how you want your rosé, right?  That's how you want your Pinot Grigio, right? Fresh? And it keeps it pretty refreshingly cold in a cooler when you want to do some illegal drinking on the beach. I live on Cape Cod so this is a very important benefit to the product.

But what about red wine that you don't want to chill and chug? Well, first of all, remember that you don't have to drink it from the can. You can pour it into a glass like you do from the bottle.

Furthermore, the key word to the phrase "ages like a fine wine" is fine. The vast majority of wine produced in the world is meant to be consumed within the first 3 to 5 years and then it starts to decline. Canned wine is definitely intended to be consumed young and the container keeps the fruit characteristics fresher and more lively than bottles do.

So the can is perfect for New World reds in the average consumer's price range because those are generally all about the fruit. Pinot Noir specifically has shown great results from being contained in a can, but also Merlot blends seem to work well too. I'm about to try a Malbec Bonarda blend that was actually made with the intention to be chilled, so that works out perfectly for the can as well!

It's always the young people who start new innovating trends like this, and in this case the young people are very concerned about the current state and future of the environment. Whelp, aluminum is one of the most, if not the most, recyclable materials on the planet with 100% recyclability. Aluminum is also lighter than glass, and that cuts down on carbon emissions during transport. Yes, the environment is absolutely a factor in the canning trend for both wine and craft beer, both in consumer concern and producer concern.

Recipe: Ribeye with chimichurri

This recipe was provided by Amayala to pair with their 2017 Malbec, which I did a little wine quickie on the other day for Malbec World Day.

INGREDIENTS:

36 oz ribeye on the bone

For the chimichurri:
2 large tomatoes
1 bunch flat leaf parsley
6 bail leaves
3 oregano bunches
4 crushed garlic cloves
3 tablespoons white vinegar
6 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon ground chili
Salt and pepper

PREPERATION:

1) Chimichurri

Remove the seeds from the tomatoes and dice. Chop parsley, basil and oregano. Mix diced tomatoes with herbs, garlic, ground chili, salt, pepper, olive oil, and vinegar.

2) Ribeye

Before marinating, score the fat on the ribeye. Marinate the meat in the chimichurri sauce for two hours.

Light and heat the charcoal grill (gas grill can be used instead). Season the steak with salt and pepper. Directly on the flame (or on high heat), sear ribeye on all sides for approximately 5 minutes. Move steak off direct flame to warm area of the grill (or turn flame down to med-heat). Cook until meat reaches internal temperature of 125°F for about 30 minutes.

During cooking, turn steak periodically, and brush with a bouquet of rosemary and the chimichurri sauce.

Remove from heat and let meat rest for 20 minutes.

3) Serve

Wine Quickie: Amalaya Malbec 2017

It's Malbec World Day so I'm here with a Malbec! It's purple in color with aromas of grape juice, back olives, vanilla, and cinnamon. On the palate it's medium bodied with a rather watery mouthfeel, grainy tannin, and unbalanced acidity. There's flavors of black cherries, grape juice, chocolate, and vanilla. The finish is the strongest aspect of this wine and my favorite part because it's big in alcohol and the character of the fruit and spice really intensifies. Overall, this is good. It's not something to hate on but also not something to put your devotion on. It's a serviceable Malbec for the price, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Wine Quickie: Amalaya Blanco 2018

This refreshing white is 85% Torrontés and 15% Riesling out of Salta, Argentina. It's medium bodied with a silky mouthfeel, vibrant acidity, and features white flowers, peaches, pears, lemon zest, grass, and seasalt. The Torrontés is the clearly the dominant grape in overall profile but the Riesling really rounds it out to make it a very satisfying crowd-pleaser. Thumbs up!

Wine Review: Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2017

Malbec World Day is on the 17th of April and I've got five wines from Argentina to review leading up to the big day. I'll doing full reviews on Colomé wines with their 2018 Estate Torrontés, their 2016 Estate Malbec (which I'm reviewing right now), and their 2017 Auténtico Malbec. And I'll also be doing some quickie reviews of Amalaya wines, starting their 2018 Blanco and ending with their 2017 Malbec on Malbec World Day itself. Both Colomé and Amalaya are owned by Hess Family Wine Estates.

Bodega Colomé is one of the oldest working wineries in Argentina, and home to the highest vineyards in the word (expect for recent plantings in Tibet). Based in the Calchaqui Valley, high in the Salta region of northwestern Argentina, Colomé was established in 1831, with vineyards planted at high elevations on original rootstock imported from Bordeaux. Vines from these historic plantings are still bearing fruit today.

The vineyards for the 2017 Auténtico Malbec are over 100 years old and 7,500 feet above sea level. It's produced using old winemaking techniques and doesn't see any oak at any point. Instead, it's aged for 10 months in stainless steel tanks and then 10 months in the bottle. The ABV is 14.5%

Wine Review: Colomé Estate Malbec 2016

Malbec World Day is on the 17th of April and I've got five wines from Argentina to review leading up to the big day. Vines from these historic plantings are still bearing fruit today.

Four estate vineyards are blended to make the 2016 Estate Malbec, but it is 100% Malbec. Colomé vineyard (65%) gives the wine its complexity and weight, the El Arena vineyard (25%) gives elegance and freshness, while La Brava vineyard (5%) brings intense ripe fruit, and finally the Altura Maxima vineyard (5%) brings floral and mineral notes with find grain tannins. It spent 15 months in French oak barrels and 6 months in the bottle before release.

Everything was done in stainless steel and it spent 3 months aging in the bottle before release. I reviewed the 2015 vintage back in 2016.

Wine Review: Ventisquero "Grey" Glacier Garnacha Cariñena Mataro 2017

Ventisquero "Grey" Glacier Garnacha Cariñena Mataro 2017

This is a blend of 62% Garnacha, 19% Cariñena, and 19% Mataro. You may know Garnacha as Grenache, Cariñena as Carignan, and Mataro as Mourvédre. All three are from the same Block 28 vineyard plot on a hill in La Robleria, Apalta in Colchagua Valley, Chile. They were all harvested at different times, however, because of the ripening stages of each variety. Only 50% of the grapes passed the inspection to make it into the crush, and then went into pre-fermentative maceration for 3 to 5 days in small open 400-kilo containers. After that it's fermented at a low temperature, then sees a post-fermentative maceration for 1 to 2 weeks before 100% of it goes into extra-fine fifth use French oak barrels for for 6 months, and then 1 month in the bottle. The final ABV is 14%.

Wine Review: Proemio Reserve Syrah Garnacha 2015

September is Proemio Month on TheWineStalker.net!

Proemio – "Prologue" in old Medieval Spanish, stands for kick-start or first page. In 2001, Marcelo Bocardo, third generation winemaker and the descendant of a traditional Italian immigrant family founded Proemio with the goal of producing high quality wines that truly represent his ancestors’ passion for viticulture and a legacy for the generations to come. Marcelo Bocardo could be described as a new wave winemaker of Argentinian wines, avoiding over extraction and heavy use of oak, focusing on expression of the terroir (i.e. Uco Valley, Pedriel-Luján de Cuyo and Maipú).

All of September is dedicated to Proemio! This is review #8 of 8 so it's the conclusion of the series, but you can read all of the reviews from this month by clicking here.

The Reserve Syrah Garnacha is 50% Syrah and 50% Garnacha from ten year old sustainable vineyards in Maipú (2,624 feet above sea level). Sustainably grown, manually harvested, fermented and macerated in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, unfined, and aged twelve months in French oak barrels. It has an ABV of 14.5% and will cost you all of $20.

Wine Reviews: Best of Summer 2018!

Tomorrow is the first day of Autumn, so here's the best wines that I reviewed for this Summer season!

#5. Minkov Brothers Tradition Cuvee 2013

Minkov Brothers Tradition Cuvee 2013Region: Thracian Valley, Bulgaria
Review Release: August 26th, 2018

The wet end of the cork is pure black and the color of the wine is an inky, deep purplish red. Let this bad boy open up because, even though it's five years old, it's still young and holding on to everything tightly until it's given time to breathe. Peppermint candy comes alive on the nose once the wine has awoken, followed by aromas of jammy blackberries, toffee, leather, fine black table pepper, and ethanol fumes. On the palate it's rich and robust with bright acidity and finely grained tannin. There's flavors of blackberries, black cherries, mocha, and... almost like I just licked a freshly cut board of oak. I'm kinda afraid I'm going to get splinters. It finishes strong and tannic with flavors of blackberries, cola, and oak.

#4. VINI Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

VINI Cabernet Sauvignon 2016Region: Thracian Valley, Bulgaria
Review Release: August 12th, 2018

It begins with a cloud of minerality above aromas of pencil shavings, cassis, and black cherries. Lingering in the background there's aromas of vanilla, black pepper, and mint. On the palate it's medium to full bodied with rich mouthfeel and finely grained, astringent tannin. There's flavors of cassis, blueberries, cocoa powder, and cedar. The tannin on the finish leaves your mouth completely dry and really delivers the words of BulgarianWine.com: A crisp, tasty, crunchy cabernet.

#3. Matsu el Viejo 2015

Region: Toro, Spain
Review Release: July 15th, 2018

The color of the wine is a dark inky purple that reminds me of my soul. Stewed plums and blackberry sauce lurch over the glass flexing their muscles. Break through the jammy guardians and you'll also find tarragon, salted almonds, and black pepper. It's medium bodied with a velvety yet rich mouthfeel, and a tart acidity that's kept in check by big grippy tannins. Blackberries and prunes combine to make a heavenly dark fruit profile, joined by vanilla and caramel. Then it finishes with a crazy long finish of black raspberries, black pepper, and caramel, with the tannin drying your mouth as the acidity wets it.

This wine is so dark and powerful and... gloomy. It's Batman. This wine is Batman. I can hear it demanding justice. It's just phenomenal, absolutely outstanding, and I can't recommend it enough. I love it when the best is saved for last. Bravo, Matsu!

Region: Long Island, New York, USA
Review Release: June 24th, 2018

The color of the wine is garnet, leaning more towards purple than red. There was a lot of tobacco and sandalwood on the nose at first, but they take a step back behind the fruit once it opens up. Just like the 2014 vintage, it's all about the black. Black cherries, blackberries, and black olives. It's medium bodied with softer tannin and less acidity than the previous vintage. On the palate the black cherries are big and juicy, and raspberries brighten up the profile while dark chocolate darkens it. The finish of black cherries and black tea goes on fooooooreeeeeevvvvvveeeeeeerrrrr.

This is yet again a perfect example of Merlot that any fan of the varietal will fall in love with, and $20 is an insanely good deal for the quality you're getting. So I'm gonna give this ANOTHER PERFECT SCORE! Lieb knows how to knock it completely out of the park with my favorite varietal. Keep that Merlot coming, guys!

#1. Proemio Reserve Winemaker's Selection 2013

http://www.thewinestalker.net/2018/09/wms.htmlRegion: Mendoza, Argentina
Review Release: September 20th, 2018 (Literally yesterday!)

Oh. Oh here we go. See, I don't even want to write a review of this. I'm wasting time here. Instead of sitting on the porch looking at the stars and drinking this wonderful wine I've got to spend the next hour analyzing it, writing about it, and then cutting a video. Goddamn it. Do you see the sacrifices I make for you people? Uuuuugh. Alright, let's get on with it then...

So yeah. The spoiler is out: This wine is PHENOMENAL. It's brick red in color with a slight hue in the purple direction. Black olive is the very first thing that pops up for me on the nose, then there's plums, blueberries, toasty oak, chocolate, mint, and saffron. It seriously the kind of nose that makes you just tilt your head away as soon as you take a whiff and say "Oh. Oh here we go."  On the palate it has a medium body, an acidity that is so perfectly balanced that you don't even know it's there (but it is because you'd notice a lack of acidity), and fine grained tannin that at this point is pretty chill. It finishes ultra long with plums, chocolate, and mint, and leaves a silky coating in your mouth literally forever.

Wine Spectator gave this 90 points. Really, Wine Spectator? Just 90 points? How dare you. This is a goddamn god among its $27 peers! I give it FIVE OUT OF FIVE in price vs quality for Highly Recommended. Spectate THAT! HA!
