Book Review: "Black Odesa" by Peter Stafford-Bow

Book Review: Black Odesa by Peter Stafford-Bow

“I jumped clear of his kicking legs, looking around frantically for a sturdy weapon - an empty Champagne bottle, or perhaps a premium Argentinian Malbec.”

Felix Hart is back in Black Odesa; the fifth book of the Felix Hart series by Peter Stafford-Bow! It all started with Corkscrew back in 2017 where we follow Felix through his early career as a wine buyer at Gatesave and his journey to becoming a Minstrel of Wine, with some whacky hijinks and globetrotting along the way. Brut Force continues his career and Minstrel-ing, amping up the hijinks all while Felix desperately tries to avoid getting whacked (by wine barrel drowning). Firing Blancs gets grounded in story and theme as Felix finds himself stuck in South Africa while trying to fix some shady winery contract business for Gatesave, and it's just a hands-down phenomenal book. Eastern Promise delivers Peter's best wit in the series, as Felix becomes the victim of video deep fakes in Hong Kong. (you'll never leave the seat cover up when flushing ever again)

You'd think that after the events of Eastern Promise, Felix would stay away from the digital world... but not this guy. In Black Odesa he enters the realm of influencers as Buff Bacchus!
“To my horror, I was informed that the courts did not consider basics such as restaurants, a personal trainer, weekend city breaks, and fine wine to be legitimate expenses, which I felt showed just how out of touch the legal profession has become.”
Felix is penniless. His bank accounts have been frozen as his finances are under investigation for his previous shenanigans. In a whirlwind of events, he goes viral being caught naked on camera when the police are attempting to apprehend him, he's fired from Gatesave, and then he kills a would-be mugger by hitting him in the head with a board... that has a nail through it. It's not looking good for Felix, honestly.

Now with plenty of free time, the Minstrels of Wine assign him a mission to go on a luxury tour by the Crimean Tourist Board. This will bring him and a group of popular influencers through Georgia and the Ukraine. The intent of the tour is to glamorize the Crimean wine industry, but the intent of his mission is to gather intel on their winemaking and growing practices.

Then he meets Katja, who will also be on the upcoming tour, and she pretty much forces him to use his newly found viral fame to become an influencer. You see, she's an influencer too. They start doing risky videos together, made to look like they're the new hot couple, with some supposed to be "educational wine videos" and others not so much. Katja insists that this romantic relationship is only for social media and ends when the camera stops, but if you know Felix then you know that he winds up falling in love with her, of course.

“Just do not fixate so much on the flavour. Everything is visual now, Felix. No-one tastes, no-one reads, no-one even thinks. People just want to look. And, of course, they want to be seen.”

While waiting for this tour to begin, Felix gets a new job as the wine buyer at the very strange Sauvage & Sons. Although... he's really not even that. At the restaurant, he finds that the wines are dull on purpose, as that's what people want now. Most of the meals come back uneaten after the customer has taken photos of it. "Food means fat", as it's explained to him. And, as we know, people love to look like they're living it up. So if they don't want him to buy wine, what do they want him for? I'm not going to go further than that as far as the plot, so you'll have to read the book. But I will say this:

Black Odesa is more than fun romping around. It has real stakes and real moments that stop and make you reflect. The restaurant is a statement on how appearances are more valuable than the actual service, now more than ever. The influencers demonstrate how engagement and views are now as good as money and even integrity. In Georgia it shows how strangers are willing to take risks by bringing you into their lives, even if you don't speak the same language. It also makes you think about how you may not know somebody as well as you think you do, because you have not lived through their experiences, so how can you fully understand the lengths they will go to because of them? And it’s all because it’s seen through the eyes of this specific character, with all his own flaws. Felix goes through a lot here, and I can't wait to see how he implements what he's learned moving forward. I stand with Ursa.

  1. With his newfound popularity, Felix is recruited for what appears to be a luxurious wine tour organized by the Crimean Tourist Board, but beneath the glamorous itinerary lies a covert mission to gather insights into regional winemaking and vineyard practices. Along the way, he meets Katja, a charismatic influencer who persuades him to capitalize on his viral fame by creating daring and entertaining social media content together. While their online romance is carefully crafted to attract followers and boost engagement, Felix gradually finds himself developing genuine feelings for Katja, creating an emotional conflict between the staged relationship they present to the world and the real emotions growing behind the scenes.

  3. Felix’s situation quickly spirals from bad to worse as his financial troubles leave him penniless and unable to access his frozen bank accounts. Things become even more chaotic when he goes viral after being caught naked on camera during a police pursuit, loses his job at Gatesave, and accidentally finds himself in an even more serious predicament after killing a would-be mugger with a board containing a nail. With one disastrous event following another, Felix’s life appears to be completely unraveling, making it difficult to see how he can escape the growing consequences of his actions.

  4. This series sounds absolutely wild, and I'm totally intrigued by Felix's chaotic journey! The idea of him becoming an influencer as "Buff Bacchus" after all those previous antics is just brilliant. It makes me think of all the absurd possibilities, like a real-life Infinite Craft scenario where anything can happen.

  5. A bot attack on my server saw me lose all my crypto assets that I have owned over the years, and this happened over night while I was trying to unwind after a busy afternoon at my ranch, I saw notifications continue to pop up on my phone showing withdrawals of which I know nothing about, and to my surprise my whole crypto portfolio was wiped out by a Bot attack, it felt so unreal and if I had not seen it with my eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it. It was devastating to say the least, but I didn’t hesitate to take decisive actions, and I quickly made the right calls, contacting my legal counsel, who redirected me to Morphohack Professional Team, a group of ethical and professional cyber experts who employed blockchain analysis to help trace and recover my crypto assets. Their efforts to trace and recover every bit of transactions, was simply astounding. Morphohack Professional Team helped me get out of a terrible situation, and for that I highly recommend their services. Their team can be found at Morphohack@cyberservices.com

  7. Great review! I've been a fan of Felix Hart since Corkscrew, and you've captured exactly what makes this series special — the balance between absurd humor and genuine heart. The influencer satire sounds painfully on point ("No-one tastes, no-one reads, no-one even thinks"), and I love that Peter Stafford-Bow keeps raising the stakes while staying true to Felix's voice. Adding Black Odesa to my list — and I'm also standing with Ursa.

  8. A wine fiction series is something I would never have picked up on my own, but this review makes Felix Hart sound like a genuinely fun character. I like that the books have real stakes and humor instead of reading like wine lectures. When I am not reading, I am usually building big round structures in Minecraft, and I rely on a Minecraft sphere generator to get the domes right block by block. This one might just land on my reading list.

  9. Great review! The deepfake plot from Eastern Promise and now the influencer world in Black Odesa feel scarily real. Half the "giveaway" links influencers share these days are sketchy, so I always run a quick scan with RogueKiller after clicking anything suspicious. Adding this series to my list.

  10. That quote about how everything is visual now hits hard. People really do judge an account by its profile picture first. I've been browsing SnapzNow for DP ideas, and it's funny how much a good image changes engagement.

  11. Looks like a fun event! Fashion show photos always make the best profile pictures. I've been collecting stylish DP images for inspiration lately.

  12. Great review — this sounds like the most fun Felix Hart installment yet. The Sauvage & Sons restaurant satire really hit home for me, since I've been to plenty of places where the plate is styled for Instagram first and flavor second. Refreshingly, not every spot is like that — the cocktail bar and restaurant scene in Valletta has some real gems where the drinks and the food live up to the photos. Adding Black Odesa to my reading list!

  13. Love how this series keeps Felix Hart stumbling from one wine-world misadventure to the next — the influencer angle in Black Odesa feels like a perfect target for his particular brand of chaos. The Sauvage & Sons satire sounds brilliant too, and having his bank accounts frozen is such a clever way to raise the stakes for a penniless wine buyer. Definitely moving this one up my reading list!

  14. Just finished Black Odesa and I loved how the Buff Bacchus influencer angle brought some real-world absurdity into Felix's wine world. The scenes at Sauvage & Sons made me wish more wine fiction celebrated restaurant culture the way it should. Reading this over a glass of Rioja at MÉZ made the whole tour sequence hit even harder. Already looking forward to the next installment!

  15. Joey, great review — this one really captures why the Felix Hart books are such a fun escape. Black Odesa sounds like Peter Stafford-Bow at his best, mixing real wine-world chaos with the Buff Bacchus influencer madness. The scene at the strange new restaurant had me grinning, and the luxury tour setup is perfect Felix: broke, frozen bank accounts, and somehow still stumbling into the good stuff. I love how the series keeps poking at the industry while still being a love letter to wine itself.

It actually reminded me of a recent evening I spent at Naan Bar, that award-winning Indian restaurant and cocktail bar in Valletta, Malta. It is a proper fine dining spot serving halal food, and their Indian-inspired cocktails pair beautifully with rich dishes, which got me thinking about how Felix would have an absolute field day there between tastings. Definitely adding Black Odesa to my reading list for my next wine trip.
