I'm going to be honest with you: I'm in no mood to write a review tonight. These last two days have been a non-stop nightmare at work and what I really want to do is have a beer and go to bed. It wasn't long ago I could handle 17 hour days of pure physical labor without a problem and did it most days of the week, but I'm no spring chicken any more. Now two 13 hour days in a row of working retail is really exhausting. But goddamnit I love my job, and I love the insanity of tourist season on one of the most famous places on Earth.
But I can't just not do the blog, right? The show must go on! Because I love you! So I'm going to give you at least a short review of a wine today. This one is from Umbria, a region in southern Italy. Cantine Rialto's Umbria Rosso is a blend of Merlot, Sagrantino and Sangiovese.
The bottle is sleek and the label is dark like most wines from southern Italy these days. The white foil on the neck does make it stand out from the others, though. The ABV is 14.5%.
Oh, by the way... My Wine Passion sent me their new corkscrew and I love it. It's just a little bigger in size than your normal double-hinged corkscrew, which are usually spiky and hard and rounded and uncomfortable in your pocket, but this one is flat and lighter in weight, making it more comfortable for someone like myself who has to keep a corkscrew on their person. Back to the wine: The nose has a lot going on. I get figs, stewed plums, maple breakfast sausage, raspberry and mint. In that order. The nose quickly and effectively establishes what kind of wine this is going to be: fruity with some sweetness. Almost a raisinated, appassimento style. The flavors on the palate are equally as deep and layered as the aromas on the nose with the same descriptors. The body is pretty heavy and there's some good tannin.
There's just something about Italian reds with that little touch of sweetness that I fucking love. Maybe because it balances out the high acidity that Italian reds tend to have. I dunno. I'm tired, leave me alone.
I do know that I've had this wine several times before and it really is a great deal for the price. Very complex, very delicious, very affordable.
