I'll be reviewing two wine by Ventisquero this week. The first is this 2016 Reserva Sauvignon Blanc and the second is the 2015 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon. In the past I've reviewed their 2013 "Grey" Glacier Carménère and their 2013 "Grey" Glacier Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 2016 Reserva Sauvignon Blanc is 100% Sauvignon Blanc out of Casablanca Valley, from sandy-clay soil. It saw twelve to fourteen hours of cold maceration and a slow fermentation. Then it was aged for four months on the lees and gently moved with battonage. The final ABV is 12% and it can be shelved for up to four years.
As you probably know, about a year ago I reignited my youth by bringing back the DC Comics fanboy in me. Well, after watching one episode a night, I just finished the complete Superman: The Animated Series. It's so good, guys. It's fun and captures the very core of the character. I've started growing really fond of Bizarro so his episodes were my favorites. If you have Amazon Prime you can watch the whole thing too, as it's available to watch with no extra charge. My daughter prefers Batman so we're slowly working through Batman: The Animated Series together, but if you've got kids that are into Supes then you've got to spend some QT watching his animated series counterpart.
Up up and away... from off-topic and back to the Sauvignon Blanc!
The color of the wine is a pale yellow with a hint of green. There's lots of lime on the nose. Not just the innards but the skins as well. There's also aromas of pear and lemon grass. On the palate it's got a touch of sweetness, tamed acidity, and a certain something that my brain connects to flouride. There's flavors of lime, grapefruit, and lychee nut. Then it finishes with lime, lychee nut, and a slight minerality. It's pretty simple and straight-forward. But in a good way?
If this was $9 I'd be saying the price for quality is right where it should be. But it's $15. And for $15 there's better Sauvignon Blancs. Sorry, Ventisquero, but it's not just you. This happens a lot with wineries I tend to really like and their Sauvignon Blancs for some reason. To name just three that come right to mind: Benziger, Duckhorn, and Oberon. I'm a big fan of their wine, but their Sauvies? Meh. And I freakin love Sauvie! Anyways... maybe it's just me. Maybe that's just one of my many fucking problems.
